Hiring grads with degrees in:  Law & Legal Studies

Legal Aid NSW is an independent statutory body, established under the Legal Aid Commission Act 1979, reporting to the NSW Attorney General. We are the largest Legal Aid agency in Australia. Our role is to deliver and coordinate legal aid services. A board of 10 members determines our policies and priorities.

We now employ over 1,000 lawyers and administrative staff in 23 offices throughout metropolitan Sydney and regional NSW. We provide legal advice, information and minor assistance and legal representation in criminal, civil and family law. We also provide alternative dispute resolution services, along with community legal education programs and outreach.

Our clients are some of the most economically and socially disadvantaged members of the community. Our priority clients include the homeless, the institutionalised, people with disabilities, women and children and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Our staff are passionately committed to their work and the positive impact they can have on the lives of our clients during times when they are often at their most vulnerable.

We are committed to ensuring that we have a workforce that is diverse and reflects our client base, with a particular focus on strategies aimed at increasing the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people working at Legal Aid NSW.

This includes programs under our Judge Bob Bellear Pathways to Legal Careers Program supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to undertake law degrees through to practicing as graduates with us in our Graduate Development Program. Under the program graduates are provided with the opportunity to practice in two of three practice areas and are provided with additional support and guidance to help them commence their legal career.

The success of these programs can be seen in the fact that we now have over 20 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander lawyers practicing at Legal Aid NSW across criminal, family and civil law, many of whom started with us as graduates and have continued their practice after finishing the program.
