In government progression is slow. It takes 2 years or more to progress up a pay band, regardless of how skilled or experienced you are

How to move up in the company has not really been discussed yet, but it's implied that grad will apply for a higher role as the grad program comes to an end.
Graduate, Melbourne - 18 Jul 2024
There is plenty of scope to be promoted or to move to other projects or government offices. I think the graduate programme is quite highly regarded and many executives in the organisation started out as grads themselves. The only concern is that graduates are not guaranteed a role at the end of the 2 year graduate programme, although it does seem like grads are always kept on.
Due to close connections with other contractor companies and law firms there is also opportunity to undertake external secondments. This is quite unique as it allows graduates to gain both public sector and private sector experience and build connections across organisations. I believe I will be well setup for a variety of career paths once I finish the programme.

As I don't know yet

Annual career progression reviews.
Graduate, Melbourne - 17 Jul 2024
This is an area of uncertainty for a lot of grads at Victoria's Big Build, given the fast-paced nature of the work and projects being completed, it is a bit of an unknown area if there will be career progression opportunities in the future for grads.
Graduate, Melbourne - 17 Jul 2024
Good system in place for promotion and career progression opportunities - some positions advertised internally before going public, promotion works in grades and you move up a grade each year if you meet expectations for the year. However, as an engineering graduate, there will likely be no positions available at the end of the graduate program and will have to look for jobs elsewhere. Previously, there would be positions for all graduates at the end of the graduate program but this is the first year this is happening.
Graduate, Melbourne - 17 Jul 2024
We will have to apply to stay on for a future role after the graduate program and that depends on whether there will be availability during that time for a role.
Graduate, Melbourne - 16 Jul 2024
We have been told that there are very limited opportunities for us to get a role after our graduate program.
Graduate, Melbourne - 16 Jul 2024
I'm feeling good about my prospects of getting a job but feel like LX has been a bit unfair to grads. It feels like P&C are trying to make us believe us not getting VPS 4 is an "opportunity". Just be honest and call it what it is.
We're also going into our last rotation doing the work of a VPS 4 but getting the pay of VPS 3??? I'm just getting more and more work while getting paid the same. Very unhappy about that.
Graduate, Melbourne - 15 Jul 2024
There are no promotion opportunities while completing the 2-year Grad Program, except in exceptional circumstances. By the end of the program, a grad is eligible for any VPS4 role or equivalent. A grad can apply at any stage for a job that interests them, given they are eligible.
Graduate, Melbourne - 15 Jul 2024
Haven't thought much about career progression yet.
Graduate, Melbourne - 05 Jul 2024
Have been told to look elsewhere for jobs are we aren't guaranteed work at the end of the program (in Feb 2025)
Graduate, Melbourne - 01 Jul 2024
Moving up in the company is a matter of waiting for a suitable role to be posted on JSE or internal opportunities and then applying for it. I think theres a lot of opportunities to move about and move up in the company. For me, this is less applicable as I am still a graduate and need more experience before I am ready to consider this.
Graduate, Melbourne - 28 Jun 2024
I am aware that they no longer promise roles after the graduate program however i feel that the training and development i have received so far has set me up well to apply for roles within the company but also elsewhere in the sector or other vps roles.
Graduate, Melbourne - 28 Jun 2024
There are little to no promotion opportunities beyond the graduate program. The organisation actively encourage people to apply for roles outside of Victoria's Big Build.
Graduate, Melbourne - 27 Jun 2024
Little to no progression opportunities at Victoria's Big Build for the graduates currently due to budgetary pressures and projects winding down. The cohort is too large / was overhired, and subsequently everyone is competing for very few positions. In past years, the trajectory is to move from graduate (vps3) to junior member of a team (vps4) and progress upwards through gaining more responsibilities and experience.
Graduate, Melbourne - 27 Jun 2024
Generally up to the grad to progress career and find employment after the grad program.
Graduate, Melbourne - 02 Mar 2021
To be honest I haven't given it too much thought just yet, but the pathways are there. A lot of managers I've come across began as graduates in other government bodies or even this company itself. To move up, you want to demonstrate an interest to learn, have strong initiative in all you do and a proven track record of results. For the bigger jumps, you also undertake professional development courses offered by the company.

Graduate program lasts too long.
