The NCMI Indigenous Scholarship Program (NISP) is an initiative of the National Collections and Marine Infrastructure (NCMI) to enhance the educational, employment, training and career development opportunities for people of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent. The program will offer opportunities to promising tertiary students in several scientific, engineering and business-related disciplines. Scholarships will typically run over the Australian summer holidays with placements beginning in late November or early December. Students will receive a stipend for the duration of their scholarship and in some cases, may also receive a contribution towards travel and accommodation costs.

The NCMI Indigenous Scholarship Program (NISP) has two opportunities for second or third year STEM undergraduate students to join the Atlas of Living Australia (ALA) for 10 weeks in the summer vacation break. The students will join the ALA Team to assist in management of its data assets and data functions. In this challenging and rewarding role you will be working with ALA staff members on the standardisation and ingestion of data into the ALA platform and have the opportunity to directly liaise with current ALA data providers, which include national leading research entities and researchers, various levels of government bodies, and citizen science organisations.

Project Title:

Building Biodiversity Data Capability for Research with a National E-Infrastructure

Project Duties/Tasks:

Under the supervision of ALA team staff members, you will:

  • work collaboratively with ALA Data Providers to prepare and load datasets in a timely and quality assured manner;
  • undertake a review of current Atlas of Living Australia (ALA) reference data and update as necessary;
  • perform business analysis functions as required to elicit, articulate and document requirements for necessary system enhancements;
  • work collaboratively in a collegiate team environment to ensure that outstanding outcomes are delivered to customers in a timely manner;
  • conduct other activities that the supervisors consider will assist with your growth and capability building.

Relevant Fields of Study:

This project is most suitable for second or third year undergraduate students who are studying STEM degrees and can demonstrate sound understanding of data and programming.

Location: Black Mountain, Canberra ACT (however remote working arrangement may be possible)
Scholarship: $1,559.85 per fortnight (before tax)
Duration: 10 weeks in the summer vacation break

Pre-Requisites/Eligibility:

These NCMI Indigenous Scholarships are open to students who are:

  • of Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent; enrolled in an undergraduate STEM degree course at an Australian university; and
  • can demonstrate sound understanding of data manipulation and some programming experience with R, Python or Java.

The filling of this vacancy is intended to constitute an affirmative measure under subsection 81(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975.

I have loved the diversity of working at CSIRO. There are so many opportunities for collaboration across science, both within CSIRO and externally, with universities, government, and industry.
